Doctor Who: Bred for War - The Sontaran Collection

This is the ultimate Doctor Who boxed set that contains two of the greatest actors to play the good Doctor which include Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. Both these actors have lent aspects of themselves to the persona of Doctor Who and whether it's the scarf carrying Baker with his wit and charm or Jon Pertwee with his holy than thou attitude, certain facets have been transferred to David Tennant's doctor.

This huge collection which runs for a whopping 672 minutes features four Doctor Who storylines that include "The Time Warrior", "The Invasion of Time", "The Two Doctors" and "The Sontaran Experiment" which collects one of the Time Lords most deadliest foes, the Sontarans.

The first story entitled the Time Warrior introduces the Sontarans to Doctor Who mythology and stars Jon Pertwee as the Doctor which also introduces Sarah-Jane Smith as his companion. When Journalist Sarah-Jane Smith impersonates her aunt, a virologist called Lavina Smith, she uncovers a devastating top secret that revolves around Earth's greatest scientists being kidnapped by a mysterious alien race.

Taken back in time by the Sontarans, they are hypnotized to repair their crashed ship only to come under the watchful eye of the good doctor himself. It's classic Doctor Who at its best that is heavy on action, although the plot is a little weak at times but it's still one enjoyable ride from start to finish and showcases a different Doctor thanks to Pertwee.

The second storyline entitled the Invasion of Time reintroduces the Sontarans to the Tom Baker era of Doctor Who and has the Doctor playing devil's advocate as he is behaving oddly on the planet of the Time Lords. Attempting to thwart the High Council of Time, it is up to Leela to investigate why the Time Lord is behaving strangely and perhaps save the day? This story features humour, action and a healthy dose of Doctor Who drama that sees an almost evil Doctor that is played perfectly by Baker unravel this deep mystery.

My favourite of the collection is the Two Doctors that stars Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton which brings two doctors together, only to discover that the Sontarans are about to dissect one of the doctors in a genetic experiment. With a vile plan to enslave the universe, it is once again up to the Doctor to prevent this heinous alien race from endangering the lives of trillions by saving himself. Definitely a fan favourite with Doctor Who fans, it's always a pleasure seeing two incarnations at work.

Lastly, the Sontaran Experiment once again returns us to the Tom Baker era that features a truly strong plot and some great locales as the Doctor uncovers a group of shipwrecked astronauts who have been lured by an alien's fake distress call, only to be victims of gruesome experiments on their physical and mental endurance as they plan to discover the weakness of humanity. Once again the Doctor intercedes in classic Whovian style with action, wit and space adventure in order to save mankind from domination.

Where the series does shine is the video and audio quality that has been improved considerably for this presentation. Match that with a plethora of special features and this is easily one of the best Doctor Who collections on the market. Brilliant from start to finish and with Father's Day coming up, what better way to treat your father.
