Australian Music Vault’s ‘Operator’ – A Workshop for Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Music Producers

As part of the Australian Music Vault’s education program, women, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming individuals will be able to hone their skills as electronic music producers in Operator, a six-week workshop using Ableton Live at Arts Centre Melbourne’s The Channel, commencing 4 October until 8 November.

The opportunity to work with established female producers and mentors will allow these up and coming artists to further develop their skills in using music production software including beginner-level learning of Ableton Live, electronic music production basics and an introduction to preparing for live performance.

Operator supports the enhanced presence of women in electronic music production, with a focus on strengthening networks, creating new connections, and offering a space for open questioning and discussion. Participants should already have some musical experience in song writing and performing, as well as have a musical goal in mind they would like to achieve.

Since its inception in 2016, Operator has continued to be a part of the education based programs that Arts Centre Melbourne offer, with the particular aim to push female representation in electronica. No longer do women need to rely on others to produce their own work with Operator allowing females more independence and freedom.

The upcoming six-week workshop program will see industry mentors Zoe Rinkel, Kids at Midnight, Bek Varcoe and Alice Ivy take the lead. Within the program, the first two workshops will be taught by Zoe Rinkel, and will be an introduction to Ableton Live including setup and navigation, creating drum tracks and tracks, using MIDI, session view and arrangement view.

Following on from that will be a session with Bek Varcoe as she details sound engineering basics and mixing in Ableton.  Kids at Midnight will show how to record and manipulate audio tracks with an introduction to Audio Effects, and the penultimate week taught by Alice Ivy will go through sampling in Ableton. The final week will be taught by Bek Varcoe and Alice Ivy together, and will allow for live performances with Ableton.

The Australian Music Vault is open daily and features a free permanent exhibition, online and interactive experiences and an extensive learning program, charting the story of contemporary Australian music from the 1950s until today. It showcases the iconic people, events and places that define Australian music in a purpose-built exhibition space within Arts Centre Melbourne’s Theatres Building. The exhibition has already welcomed over 400,000 people since it opened in December 2017.
